I now live in a very small town, and one of the many (im)practical upshots of this is I now watch more television than ever before. With the writers striking, there has been precious little new material of late, so I've taken to filling the void by watching TV on DVD and online. Here are the things I've most enjoyed:
How I Met Your Mother: This is, essentially, Friends all over again, which is a good thing. Ignore the twist of the story being told from the distant future and just enjoy the five dysfunctional New Yorkers' meanderings through early adulthood. You'll be glad you did, and you'll thank me when you've seen enough to understand the full ramifications of these two words: Slap Bet.
Rules of Engagement: If you're a Seinfeld fan, you'll know Patrick Warburton as Puddy, the squinting on-again-off-again boyfriend of Elaine. Here, he's Jeff, the stereotypical male in a long-term, semi-happy marriage. I can't describe why, but his line deliveries make me laugh my big "embarass strangers at 100 yards" laugh. Check it out at cbs.com.
The Big Bang Theory: Two ubernerds living across the hall from a hottie. Highjinks ensue. I've enjoyed all eight episodes, but I couldn't imagine a show which relies so heavily on the fact that half the dialogue consists of words not in the average American's vocabulary would be successful. Nonetheless, I read today that the ratings have been strong, and the show will be back for a second season. If you think you're smarter than most everyone you know, you should probably give it a try. :)
FYI: Lest you think I'm just a shallow couch potato, it should be noted that I spend my days teaching college English, talking about William Faulkner, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Alice Walker, and the like. After that, a sitcom is usually just about right for the wind-down.
